Columbia: The Non Traditional Method of Online Experimentation - Zpryme
Austin, TX (ZPRYME NEWS) – 04/09/08 - Columbia's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science are doing their experimentations by using the internet. This is called remote experimentation. In the study Virtual Laboratories and Real-Time Experiments in Engineering Education stated that “The increasing number of students, the constant or decreasing amount of allocated resources, the demand for more flexible class schedules and the changing life style are forcing universities to find an alternative to traditional on-campus classes. Distance education has been around for some time.” Even if remote experimentation has been around for some time, it’s full potential has not been explored by many sectors.
A school that is under funded can have access to costly experiments that are done in other schools that can afford to conduct such experiments. All the school needed an experimentation site, fast internet connection and cameras that can help view the site. According to Suzanne Trimel writer of Remote Experiments Via the Internet Being Tested at Engineering School, “Schools or other institutions could pool resources to establish an experimentation site, then rent "time" for other students to perform and monitor experiments on their computers over the Internet.” This way, the school can save up money buying experiment equipment and setting up the equipment. Students can observe experiments done from anywhere in the world. This also saves the school from worry of the hazards of experimentation. If potentially dangerous experiments are done like experiments concerning hazardous chemicals, students are behind their computers watching the experiment. It is beneficial for the student to do the experiment is but is not practicable among many students.
Admittedly, there are drawbacks in remote experimentation but in the study Virtual Laboratories and Real-Time Experiments in Engineering Education ,” A more important meaning is to be able to “see” phenomena which are hard or impossible to simulate otherwise.” With remote experimentation students can have a glimpse of the interplay between the different concepts and principles that they are studying. With the increase of the bandwidth in the internet, information seen only delayed a minimal few seconds or it can be said that it is watched in real time. Remote experimentation is a good solution to schools that are under funded or strapped for cash.
