The crisis arrived just early in 2008, but at an unexpected rate higher than what was predicted. BBC News reports early January 2008 that “The feared recession in the US economy has already arrived, according to a report from Merrill Lynch. It said that Friday's employment report, which sent shares tumbling worldwide, confirmed that the US is in the first month of a recession.”

The Chicago Tribune quoting the World Bank said, “Food prices are soaring around the world- up 83 percent in the last three years.” The price of rice increased from $400 per ton to $1,000 per ton. That’s more than double of the original price. The Chicago Tribune quoted Robert Zoellick the President of World Bank saying that around 100 million people are pushed into poverty because of the food prices.

The prime issue of these investors was problems of land and housing in Ukraine.
